Motherswhowork.co.uk itself was set up when our founder and editor, Joycellyn Akuffo was made redundant in 2007!
This is what happened when Sheffield-Based mum of three Yee Kwan decided to tap into her love of ice cream, when she was made redundant as a surveyor in 2009.
Turning a passion into a business is the stuff that dreams are made of, and what better way to see it become reality than with the backing of a Dragon like Deborah Meaden of TV’s Dragon’s Den?
Inspired by her Chinese heritage, and the flavours she encountered on an inspirational trip around south-east Asia, Yee set up her own business, Yee Kwan (www.yeekwan.com) to pursue her passion for ice cream. Five years and a range of 20 delicious flavours later, Yee appeared on TV’s Dragon’s Den seeking £50 000 investment to grow her Award-winning company.
Today, Yee’s business produces 18,000 litres of ice cream and sorbet a year, and is stocked in Harvey Nichols and Wholefoods Market, as well as in a growing number of restaurants and independent retailers across the country.
