Family’s third birth tragedy

A woman died in childbirth at the same age and in the same way as her mother and aunt, an inquest heard.

Kelly Hutchings was killed by a brain haemorrhage at 22 while giving birth to Nikita.

It was caused by a rare neurological condition which also claimed the lives of mother Shirley and aunt Sue Hickmott while they were in childbirth in the 1980s – also at the age of 22.

A 'clerical error' meant Miss Hutchings did not get an appointment to discuss having specialist care, midwife Donna Ockendon told the inquest. The mother-to-be, of Fareham, Hampshire, gave birth at Southampton General Hospital in November 2005.
