Breastfeeding at work – the last office taboo-b?

Even working mums want to give their baby the best start in life with breastfeeding

No matter how soon women decide to go back to work after having a baby – this could be after two weeks or an extended maternity leave of over 52 weeks – mothers may feel they are faced with a difficult dilemma should they want to continue breastfeeding.

For some women, continuing to breastfeed once back at work can be a good way of coping with being separated from the baby for the first time. Women shouldn’t worry about continuing to breastfeed when returning to work as there are certain rights that are laid down by law.

Options for breastfeeding at work

There are several options in which mothers can breastfeed when back at work. Depending on where the baby is being cared for, women may be able to visit the baby at their childcare during the working day.

Calling all dads: Channel 4 wants to give you the ultimate childcare challenge

Are you up for the Channel 4 challenge?

Channel 4 is making a new documentary series which aims to show how important men are in children’s upbringing. It will explore why so few men choose to work in nurseries and look at men who want to be better fathers themselves, but have no idea about what it takes.

Currently, only 2% of people working in childcare are men. Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, made a keynote speech in June 2010, in which he highlighted this issue.

The Channel 4 series hopes to empower a nation of men to spend more time with their own kids and even inspire some to consider the childcare profession.

The idea of the show is to select four men who live in or close to LONDON to work in a rea-life nursery for three weeks, under the careful supervision of the nursery staff. The men will be carefully selected and undergo extensive checks.

Mumpreneur launches afterschool care website for working mums

Finding afterschool care to meet your family's needs just got easier

Mumpreneur Nicky Grant has launched www.afterschoolcare.co.uk, a web-based venture that seeks to match working mothers with enthusiastic and experienced child carer providers.

As well as nannies, nursery nurses and teachers, the site also attracts students, part-time workers and grandmothers with a wealth of  experience raising children – and a bit of time to spare.

After School Care was set up by Nicky in Buckinghamshire in response to her own experience, and research, indicating that working women with school-aged children don’t want to employ a full-time nanny and are increasingly looking for part-time care before and after school.

“The credit crunch has meant that everyone has had to look again at cutting costs and a lot of mothers who work and have school aged children no longer want to pay for fulltime childcare,” says Nicky.

Put your best foot forward and impress at job interviews

Of course, most of us do not fail at job  interviews by choice—it is simply the employer’s choice to take on someone else. However, there are things that you can do at job interviews that can jeopardise your chances – with or without you even knowing it:

Being late to the job interview

Although there may be some circumstances (like snow, major road accidents etc) that are beyond your control, for the most part if you plan your time properly, there should be no excuse for arriving late for your job interview.

Things such as traffic delay or being unable to find the employer’s place of business are acceptable. If you have allow enough time and plan to get there early, you will not be late.

Are you too stressed at work to take holidays? So are 24% of UK workers, who have 10-plus days holiday left to take

holidays
Are you so stressed you haven't booked your annual leave yet?

With just 21 working days left until Christmas, British offices could be facing a mass exodus as exhausted staff line up to take their remaining 2010 holiday allocation. A poll announced today from Monster.co.uk has shown that many workers could in fact be on holiday for over half the remaining time before Christmas – with an unbelievable 1 in 4 workers saying they have ten or more days of holiday left to take.

The poll, which surveyed over 3,200 UK workers, further demonstrated that many felt dissatisfied with their holiday process. 55 per cent of respondents felt that it was difficult to spend time with their friends and family because of work and felt that they were dissatisfied with the amount of holiday they’d been able to take this year.

Real mum profile: Joelle Seksum of www.Josoblu.co.uk

Mum-of-two Joelle Seksum, 37, tells www.motherswhowork.co.uk how she set up her business Josoblu, www.Josoblu.co.uk, when she couldn’t find a suitable baby change bag when her first child was born.

What work did you do before you set up your company?

I renovated a few properties before having my first child, Lucie, and have been a full-time mother since.

How did you fund the business?

We raised the money for the business through a combination of personal loans, savings and great financial support from my family.

What was the motivating factor for starting your own business?

When Lucie was born I wanted to buy a pretty, sturdy and practical change bag I could take out with us, but the models on offer were quite dull. I thought to myself, ‘Yes these products need to be functional but there’s no reason at all why they can’t also be fun, bright and fashionable too’ and so decided to take the plunge and design my own range.

Having two young children meant that a flexible working arrangement was key and by setting up from home I could run my own business, whilst at the same time being able to spend lots of time with my children.
