A third of women say the man in their life has ‘m-anorexia’

Research published today has revealed that a third of UK women are worried that their partner or husband is showing early signs of the eating disorder anorexia. The statistics also show that women attribute the rise in M-anorexia to peer group pressure, and that men are increasingly feeling the need to lose weight in order to live up to the film persona of Hollywood’s leading actors.

The research, which sought the views of 3,000 women took part in the research for leading UK fashion website, www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk after the company decided to commission the research having initially asked it users what charity they thought the site should link up with in 2009 and charities relating to eating disorders got several mentions.

When asked if they knew anyone who they thought was potentially suffering from anorexia or a similar eating disorder, 31% of the 3,000 women who took part in the survey chose the “boyfriend/fianc?/husband” option.

Of the respondents, 37% said that they had a friend who they thought was potentially suffering from anorexia, 14% chose a “family member/relative” option, 7% said “myself” and only 11% said they did not know anyone who they thought was potentially suffering from anorexia or a similar eating disorder.

MyCelebrityFashion is now looking to link up with a leading eating disorder charity for 2009 and will be placing a link to an eating order advice helpline and website on its own website in order to try and offer help to those who are affect or know someone who is affected.

Other notable results from the research include the finding that the majority, 42%, of those polled have subjected themselves to four crash diets last year. 13% of people admitted to ?crash dieting? more than 10 times in 2008. More than two-thirds of the women (68%), admitted to skipping meals on a daily basis in a bid to lose weight. Just 23% of females questioned were happy with their appearance.
