A church minister who was gunned down during his Sunday sermon deflected the first of the gunman’s four rounds with a Bible, police said.
Initially the congregation of the First Baptist Church in Illinois thought Reverend Fred Winters and the gunman were acting out a sketch.
The gunman walked down the aisle of the church shortly after 8am spoke briefly with the minister, then pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and began firing until it jammed.
