What do Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Jemima Goldsmith have in common? Yes, they’re all paparazzi eye-candy but, like many of us, they are also mothers. And the fact they look so good on it forces us to take a long hard look in the mirror.

As these gilded lilies illustrate, the production of offspring does not have to mean the loss of all personal style. But, for those of us without personal assistants or platinum credit cards, the loss can happen very easily. And clawing your way out of the slummy-mummy pit can seem an impossible challenge. Luckily, you don’t have to do it on your own.
Personal stylists, once the preserve of movie stars and millionaires, are now coming to the rescue of lost mothers. Noni Ware, formerly Retail Editor for Harper’s Bazaar, is one of them. “There’s so much choice on the high street that it’s hard to know where to start, which can be scary for women who have been out of the fashion game a while,” she says.
