Scroll social media for five minutes and you will be told to follow your passion, quit your job and build an empire before the school run. It is exhausting. And for most of us, it is not real life.
Many working mums are in jobs they chose for the hours, the location or the steady pay. Not because it was their dream. If that is you, this post is a gentle reminder that a job does not have to be your calling to be meaningful.
A Job Can Be a Gift Without Being a Dream
Think about what your job makes possible. The roof over your family’s head. The swimming lessons. The security of knowing the bills are paid. The flexibility to be at the school play.
That is not settling. That is providing, and there is real dignity in it. Some seasons of life are about building and stretching. Others are about sustaining and holding steady. Both matter.
Find the Meaning in the Everyday
Purpose is often found in how we work, not just what we do. Look for it in:
- The people. The colleague you encourage, the customer you help on a bad day, the new starter you show the ropes.
- Doing things well. There is quiet satisfaction in a job done carefully and honestly, whatever the job.
- Growth. The skills you are building now may open doors you cannot see yet.
There is an old wisdom that says whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. Not because the job is perfect, but because the effort itself has worth.
Notice What Lights You Up
Even in a job that is not your dream, some tasks will energise you more than others. Over the next month, jot down the moments you lose track of time, or feel proud, or think “I’m good at this.”
Those moments are clues. They might point to a future change of role, a side project, or a skill to develop. They might simply show you what to ask for more of in your current job.
Keep a Small Dream Alive
You do not have to quit to grow. Keep a small dream alive alongside your work:
- a short course in something that interests you
- a volunteering role that uses your gifts
- reading about a career you are curious about
- a conversation with someone who does the work you dream of
Small steps, taken faithfully, add up over time.
When It Is Time to Move On
There is a difference between a job that is not your dream and a job that is harming you. If you dread every day, feel undermined or unsafe, or it is affecting your health, it may be time to plan a change. That is not failure. It is wisdom.
What You Cannot Control
You cannot control every opportunity that comes your way, or the timing of the next season of your life. You can choose to bring your whole self to today, and to trust that nothing you learn here is wasted.
Your worth was never found in your job title. You are valued for who you are, not just what you produce. Rest in that, and let it change how you walk into work on Monday morning.
