How to help a child that’s falling behind at school
Let’s face it, with all the best will in the world, not every child is going to be like Einstein (and neither should they!), but you as a parent will know when your child is falling behind at school.
So what can you do about it? Here are some tips:
1. Work out what the problem is
Its’s easy to say that your child is falling behind, but does it actually mean just need a few hours workto catch up, or are they just struggling at school in general? A clear idea of what the actual problem is will make it easier to formulate a solution.
2. Have you/can you help?
If your child is falling behind at school, a few hours a week of help from you could be all they need. If you know thatyou can’t help them –  because you’re terrible at maths, for example – then it’s time to get some help.
3. Speak to your child’s teacher
Sometimes, a few extra worksheets for homework for a couple of weeks is all that’s needed to get back on track.
Maybe your child needs some help from a special needs teacher, or someextra reading time with a teaching assistant. Speaking to the teacher is a good place to start.
4. Get independent help
Sometimes, teachers are not able to help or provide any more assistance – perhaps your child is getting all the extra help available at school but is just not flourishing as they should.
Have you thought about using a private tutor With one-to-one tuition, your child can get specific help at their speed and fill in any gaps – even get them ahead of their peers, so they don’t struggle so much. Speak to friends and family to see if they know a good tutor they can recommend.
