It may seem unusual to move from being a draughtswoman for an electrical engineering firm to being a childminder, but when Christine Baker wanted a new and challenging career to fit in with her other commitments, childminding was a natural choice.
Although Christine was successful at her previous career, she found herself seeking new challenges after the birth of her children.? Christine wanted to embark on a career she would enjoy but would also offer her the potential for continuous development and training.? She realised that a career on Early Years and Childcare would be perfect for her as it would allow her to balance her work and family commitments, whilst continuing to learn and progress.
Christine began her career change by completing an ?Introduction to childminding? course. This allowed her to begin childminding, however a discussion with an OFSTED inspector made her realise there were a wealth of training and development opportunities available, so she went on to study the NVQ level three in Early Years and Childcare. Christine has now enrolled on a Foundation Degree in Early Years, attending a local university part-time. She believes all of her qualifications help her to be a better childminder, as she can see the theory behind each of the activities she does and is able to offer more to each child.
Although Christine likes to try to set up a stable routine for the children she looks after, she does admit that each day can end up being completely different, due to the varied personalities of the children themselves.? Christine has responsibility for teaching the children through every day activities, organising trips and excursions and managing bookings and payments.? She also attends childminding conferences so she can keep up to date on new Early Years and Childcare legislation.
Christine said: “I love childminding as there is a lot more flexibility than in my previous job and I love building a bond with the children.? However, I am always very busy, it certainly isn?t what I would call an easy career: I?m always on the go!”
“I would recommend that anyone who enjoys interacting with children considers a career in childminding as I have found it to be extremely rewarding.? If you are not sure then give it a go!? Plenty of registered childminders offer work experience so you can find out more about what the job entails.”
