Most people who have four children under six and have just separated from their partners would not consider completely changing their career, but this exactly what Hilary Wildman did.
Almost five years ago Hilary was going through a difficult patch: she was made redundant from her job as a sales manager, she had separated from her husband and she was struggling to find childcare for her children during the summer holidays. It was at this stage when she decided to retrain and work within the early years and childcare sector, as it would enable her to be with her young family when they needed her.
Hilary contacted the Children?s Information Service who directed her to her local early years and childcare recruitment officer, where she found out about the availability of courses and funding. This was the beginning of her pursuit of a more rewarding career, which also enabled a good work/life balance.
Hilary?s hard work and dedication has gained her NVQ levels two and three and also seen her career progress from nursery nurse, to a pre-school deputy, to her current role as a family worker assistant. With the training opportunities that are available, Hilary is also studying for a degree in education studies.
Hilary?s day is very varied as she has a number of different aged children coming into the group sessions where she helps them develop a range of skills. She also provides much needed support to vulnerable families. Knowing she makes a real difference to the lives of children and parents makes Hilary feel extremely proud.
Hilary said: “I am proof you can retrain and have a fulfilling job at any age or circumstance. There are so many opportunities out there to work with children and families and I would encourage anyone who is caring and wants a job that makes them feel really valued to give it try.
“The loveliest thing about my job is watching a small child who is shy or has certain difficulties, overcome obstacles with a little help and encouragement from me and my colleagues, then leave a couple of years later so much happier and with much more confidence.”
