Here we go again… do we really need a judge to let people know this? Taking time out to have a child does not mean you should do the same job for less pay than your male counterpart! It astounds me how this even got to court. It’s like saying that if a man and a mother both ran the Marathon and the mum had taken time out to look after her child during training, that even though she still ran the race she cannot qualify as taking part…
Women who take career breaks to bring up children may be entitled to the same salaries as men who have never stopped working, appeal judges have ruled.
They said some employers who set salaries based on length of service act in a manner that is unfair to women.
The ruling in the case of health and safety inspector Christine Wilson will mean that mothers with gaps in their service have a chance of seeing their pay raised to the level of male colleagues with unbroken records.
The Appeal Court judges ruling means that employers will not be able to pay men more than women if they have been given higher pay just for long service and their extra time in work has not meant they have greater training or skills.
