New checklist takes the stress out of childcare choice

A new childcare checklist has been released to help parents who are looking for a new childcare regime in 2008 find the setting best suited to them and their child.

The checklist, published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, is a practical and accessible guide, designed to help parents identify high quality childcare. It outlines what parents should be aware of when visiting a potential nursery, such as imaginative artwork on the walls and effective safety measures in place so parents can be confident their child will flourish in a creative and safe childcare environment.

The guide is part of the larger government campaign, Altogether Better for Children, that aims to raise awareness of the affordability of childcare, the services available through local children?s centres and the positive impact of extended schools initiatives on children.

The campaign launched in November last year with a photocall with Beverley Hughes, minster of state for children, Angela Griffin, ex-Coronation Street star and children at the Marsham Street Children?s Centre, Westminster.?

You can get more information on choosing a childcare setting from your local Children?s Information Service. Find the one nearest to you by phoning 0800 234 6346 or visiting www.direct.gov.uk/childcare
