Freelancing is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to start working for yourself. And the great thing is that you often don’t need to make any financial outlay – unless you need specialist equipment that you can’t hire or your client can’t supply.

We spoke to m,um of two Laura Yates (@laurster) who is a self-employed workshop facilitator and freelance writer and works on a freelance basis.

Starting out as a single mum with no qualifications, she has built up on her skills and qualifications in the past 11 years. But it was after the birth of her second son, Billy, 3, that she decided that working as the manager of a learning centre was not giving her the flexibility and lifestyle she or her family needed.

So, she bit the bullet and started freelancing – and all while studying an English literature and creative writing degree!

Listen to the podcast to find out how Laura has made freelancing work for her.
