With many women keen to get their pre-pregnancy bodies back and rebuild confidence post childbirth, cosmetic surgeons worldwide are noticing a rise in popularity of the ‘Mummy Makeover’, a new cosmetic surgery trend for mothers. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has recently been rumoured to have undergone the treatment, and Kim Kardashian is said to be making plans for after the birth of her second child.

According to medical travel facilitator Medigo.com, a mummy makeover isn’t a one-size fits all set process of procedures, but is tailored to the needs of each patient to help give their body confidence a boost. Typically treatment targets stubborn areas such as stretch marks, sagging breasts and excess fat on the stomach, hips, buttocks, thighs and arms, which can be resilient to diet and exercise.

Although this tailored package of treatments is available in surgeries worldwide, many new mothers are picking Brazil as their destination of choice, thanks to its world-renowned, quality cosmetic surgeons. According to recent figures from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), Brazil is ranked as the number two hotspot for plastic surgery in 2014, with over 2 million surgeries performed there each year.

No surprise then, that Medigo.com’s own figures show that Brazil is the most travelled to destination for plastic surgery among Brits, looking for excellent quality of care and affordable treatments. At Medigo’s Clinica Leger, Dr. Leonardo Sauerbronn Muniz has noticed an increase in British women coming for the mummy makeover procedure. The reason is clear: “Even after maintaining their ideal weight, many women notice saggy skin in the stomach after pregnancy, especially those who have given birth more than once,” says Dr. Muniz. “Surgery can help to remove excess tissue and repair the abdominal rectus muscle to help reshape the body. These surgeries are not a slimming method. The ideal is that it complements a balanced diet and the use of moisturizing creams during pregnancy.”

Londoner Erika Palmer travelled to Rio de Janeiro through Medigo.com for the surgery – a tummy tuck, breast lift and fat transfer. “The most important thing for me was to go to a place where I could get the best outcome.  After doing my research, I found that Brazil is the top for plastic surgery,” she says.

“I was 18 years old when I had my daughter. Being a single mother after that, I wasn’t as comfortable with my body as much as I wanted to be.  My body turned into something I couldn’t recognize when I looked in the mirror.” Erika is delighted with the results of her surgery and is now planning another visit to Brazil – this time to show off her bikini body!
