Small businesses on the up, but most headed up by men

Results from the Annual Small Business Survey (2006/07) have shown that small business are making steady progress.

However, of the 9,000 business surveyed, only 14 percent were led by women, or had a management team made up in the most part of females.

The small business enterprises that were female-led also tended to be smaller businesses with fewer employees.

Sex aside,? the aspiration amongst small enterprises appears to be booming with 65 percent wanting to grow in the next two to three years. One in five surveyed, had taken on new employees in the past twelves months to prepare themselves to do so and to cope with increasing demand for their products and services.

Business Enterprise minister, Shriti Vadera said:

“Getting more women into business is a challenge, not just for gender equality but for national economic success. We would have 700,000 more businesses if proportionally as many British women as American women started businesses.

“We will unveil an enterprise white paper next month to help unlock the talents of more people, make growing a business easier and narrow the productivity gap between Britain and the US.”
