Teachers say recession is no excuse, as they demand 10% pay rise

Teachers called for a ten per cent pay rise today after hearing low salaries are forcing young recruits out of the profession.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) said ministers must not use the recession as an excuse to cut pay.

Delegates at the organisation’s annual conference in Cardiff backed a motion instructing the NUT’s executive to seek an increase of ?3,000 or ten per cent, whichever is greater, for all salaries.
