What to wear to a job interview

Look your best and impress at job interviews

Going to an interview can be nerve wracking, but one way to break this is to get your outfit right. It’s simple psychology – if you look right, and you know you do – then it helps to make you feel more confident about yourself, and it will show during the interview.

You want to look professional and look like you are going to fit in with the company. A good rule of thumb you can’t overdress for the interview – a suit is always a safe choice.

For women, picking the right outfit for an interview can be quite challenging if you don’t want to wear a suit.

You need to choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in and that fits you properly. You don’t want to wear a skirt that is so short that you end up tugging at it to protect your modesty when you sit down, or a top that it too low and reveals too much cleavage. Far from enticing your interviewer, it will give the wrong impression.

Choose colours that suit you but aren’t too bright. Don’t choose patterns that are too bold – you want the focus to be on your answers, not what you are wearing.

Remember, too, that your overall appearance is going to be judged, and this includes more than the clothes you are wearing.

Hygiene and grooming is a must

It goes without saying that you need to be clean, neatand tidy when you go for a interview. That means clean nails, no chipped nail polish (bright-coloured nail polish), groomed hair, and fresh smelling.

Bad breath is also a big no-no. Make sure you carry some mints with you, or brush your teeth immediately before you go to the interview. You can arrive a little early and ask to use the toilet, then check your teeth is free from any breakfast residue!

Avoid wearing strong perfume – chances are you will be in a small room and it could make your interviewer uncomfortable.

You may wonder what all of these details has to do with your qualifications and getting the job. It has to do a lot with it, especially if you are going to be dealing with the company’s customers face-to-face.

The interviewer will be looking for employees who are going to represent the company in the best possible light – and they want to make sure that they can get on with you too. If you can’t make an extra effort for an interview, then that actually speaks volumes for the kind of employee you will be.
