5 Tips for Returning to Work After Maternity Leave

Congratulations on your new arrival! Whether it’s your first or fifth baby, becoming a parent is an amazing achievement that comes with lots of challenges. One of those challenges is returning to work after maternity leave. Here are five tips to make going back to work after baby a little easier:

Tip #1: Talk to Your Boss in Advance

It’s always a good idea to have a discussion with your boss before you go on leave so that they know your plan and can prepare for your absence. But it’s especially important to touch base before you come back so that you can set expectations for the transition period. Let them know what your schedule will look like, how many days you’ll be working, and whether you’ll need any accommodations. This will help them adjust their expectations and give you the support you need to ease back into work mode.

Tip #2: Create a Support System at Work

If possible, create a support system at work by enlisting the help of a trusted colleague or two. Ask them to keep an eye on your email and flag anything urgent while you’re out. Give them your cell number in case of emergencies. And when you return, see if they’re available for regular check-ins, either in person or via email, to help you stay on top of things. Having someone you can rely on will help reduce your stress and make the transition back to work much smoother.

Tip #3: Get Organised Before You Leave

One way to make coming back from leave less overwhelming is to get organised before you leave. If possible, try to wrap up any loose ends on projects so that you can hit the ground running when you return. Or if that’s not possible, make sure all your projects are well documented and that someone else is up to speed on what needs to be done. This will save you time and energy when you get back and help you avoid falling behind.

Tip #4: Schedule some “Me Time”

When you first return to work, everything will be new again – new colleagues, new projects, new responsibilities. It can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget to take care of yourself. So one of the best things you can do is schedule some “me time” into your week, even if it’s just 30 minutes here or there. Use this time to do something that makes YOU happy, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or taking a yoga class. Taking care of yourself will help reduce stress and make it easier to balance work with motherhood.

Tip #5: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it – from your boss, from your co-workers, from your family, or from friends. No one expects you to do it all, so don’t try! Prioritise what’s most important and let the rest go. Delegating tasks and asking for assistance will free up some time so that you can focus on what matters most…and maybe even get a little sleep!

Starting back at work after having a baby can be overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be! By following these simple tips, you can ease into motherhood while still managing life at the office seamlessly. So take a deep breath…and remember that you’ve got this!
