According to a new study, on six percent of us are happy with our jobs. The remaining 94 percent are miserable at work, feel regularly unhappy during the work weak, and one in five of us get depressed at the office every day.

If you fit into the six percent who are happy at work – fantastic, well done! But if you fall into the miserable majority, then it’s time you made a change in your life! You basically have one of three options:
1. look for a new job or career
2. start a new business
3. stay in your current job (it’s a regular income after all), but start building up some freelance work doing what you enjoy
Whatever you do, don’t do nothing – and don’t use the fact that you are a mum as an excuse to stay in a job you hate, doing things in a way that you hate.
According to the same survey, most of us dream about setting up a business, with two-thirds of us believing that we would only be truly content at work if we were self-employed. But 70 percent of us think a career change isn’t an option while unemployment rates are high.
Setting up a new business is not as difficult and as costly as you probably think. But for some people, the thought of taking the plunge is so off putting that nothing gets done. If this sounds like you, then have you thought of starting a freelance service instead?
Freelance work is sustainable and earns well
Working as a freelance means that you don’t have to put the same business pressures on yourself, and you can work around your current work and family commitments. Freelance work is a great way to start building contacts and a reputation, and if you choose to, when you have more freelance work than the time to do it in, you can decide to either reduce your hours at work, gradually becoming fully self-employed, or you can outsource or employ others to do some of the work for you.
Freelance work is now more in demand than ever – businesses may be making redundancies, but they still need the work done…just not with permanent staff.
In the next few days, we will be showing you how to start a freelance service, without spending any money. Watch the introductory video below for a taster of what the Going Freelance series will contain.
Watch out for our Going Freelance series, which will be made available to the Mothers Who Work subscribers – this is just a taster.
