Cash will do nicely, mum

British children are collectively set to receive ?2.4 billion in cash from friends and relatives this Christmas, a survey shows.

Just under half of adults said they planned to give children money rather than a present this year, with people handing over an average of ?94.82 each, according to a surevy by YouGov.

Most adults give between ?20 and ?50, but nearly one in 10 will hand over between ?101 and ?250 this Christmas.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, said: “Giving kids some cash for Christmas is a good way to put a smile on their face – and possibly help them to get the savings habit.

“I don’t want to spoil the fun but if your child has some cash lying around on top of their Christmas presents this year, it might be worth suggesting they start saving.

“It might not be what every kid wants but it’s certainly a good way to introduce the idea of thinking about money.”

YouGov questioned 1,978 people during November.
