Love shouldn’t be marked by one day in the year, should it?

Is it safe to come out yet? Have the heart-shaped balloons sagged or floated away? Have the cheap champagne bottles rolled under the sofa?

Has the tacky red? and black viscose seduction wear finally left the shopfloor?

Can I crawl out from under the bed? Every year I approach Valentine’s Day with less importance – the love in my marriage shouldn’t hang on how great a gift I gave to my husband – or how many jewels, or oysters there were at a restaurant dinner we had to arrange unecessary childcare for. If that is all our marriage had, we’d be in trouble.

There’s also the fact that our son’s birthday is on 13th February, so for the past five years, we have had to arrange the weekend around him and whatever activity we have planned to make his birthday special for him… and to be honest, once that has come and gone, we just about have enough energy to sleep, let alone go out just to be seen to be romantic!
