Who knew children can create so much mess. From using multiple cups, to endless piles of washing, the school summer holidays can create a battlefield at home.
August is here, but there still is a good four weeks to go until schools open again. How do you make sure the mess doesn’t drive everyone to distraction? Here are some tips:
Reward young children for tidying up
Yes – you’re spending a lot this summer, and the last thing you probably want is another money drainer, but reward charts can motivate children – and they don’t have to mean you spend money.
So, it could mean for a toddler, that every time they clean up after themselves, they get a star on their chart and at the end of the week, they get to choose a toy from the pound shop, or go to the local park.
Older children may snigger at a reward chart, but if the end result is something they find worthwhile, you’d be surprised at how they’ll be transformed! This could be a ticket to see their favourite group, or a gadget for Christmas.
Buy peace of mind
As they say, peace of mind is priceless. If dishes are a bone of contention in your house and you’re looking for a way to stop he bickering, why not invest in a dishwasher. Go online and shop for a bargain – even the big brands have online sales all year round, so it might not be as expensive as you think.
Set up a rota
If you can’t get everyone to help, then make it tough by setting a rota. This is great for older children who moan about doing more than their siblings. If they can see it in black and white and count how many chores they have compared to everyone else they won’t have any cause for complaint.
Agree some penalties for those who do not honour their rota responsibilities, so that everyone is clear about the consequences.
