Interview Tips That Will Get You Your Dream Job – Tip 3: Become An Actor

By Nina Hill (Professional Life Coach)

Last week I concentrated on building confidence. This weeks focus is about acting as if you are confident.

Many of us do not realise that 55% of our meaning is communicated through what we do with our body (physiology), 38% from the tone of our voice and only 7% from the words that we use.

We all know how depression or a low mood leads people to hold their body. i.e. what goes on in our head affects our physiology. What many of us do not realise is that the way we hold our body can affect what is going on in our head!

The most effective way to project confidence is to act as if you are confident. After all, actors portray feelings to their audience by acting the feeling. As a coach I know that this is the strategy used by many people throughout a typical working day. The majority are insecure individuals acting as if they are secure. They are just stepping into their fear. So, even if you’re not feeling confident, it is okay to act as if you’re brimming with confidence.

If one person can act confident so can you. Ask yourself: How does a confident person walk and talk? How do they behave? Observe confident people. Ask your confident friends what they do to act or feel confident. Then practice what they do and be confident.

Remember that the interview begins when the interviewer first sets eyes on you so act confident. In fact if you act this way all the time, one day you will realise that you really are confident.

Next week: Practice makes perfect.
