Interview tips that will get you your dream job – Tip 2: That Magic Word ? Confidence

Interview Tips That Will Get You Your Dream Job
Nina Hill (Professional Life Coach)

Last week I concentrated on developing a positive mental attitude. This weeks focus is on how to build confidence.

Most of us feel anything but confident as we enter the interview room. Nervous and terrified are often words used to describe our feelings just prior to an interview. It is not unusual to feel this way, however, if you intend to portray yourself as a serious and professional candidate you must project an air of confidence and professionalism.

So how do you improve your interview confidence?

Look me in the eye/Make comfortable eye-contact
In our culture we often use eye contact to gauge confidence. Looking away while listening can also show a lack of interest, a short attention span or a subtle indication that you may be lying. Ask a trusted friend if you ever lack good eye contact. Then practice with them and others until you are able to maintain sincere and comfortable eye contact.

Look good ? feel great
Consider how good you feel about yourself when you know you look great. This can add a feeling of confidence to the professional, polished image you are trying to project.

Preparation means confidence
The act of writing out your answers to difficult questions and reading through the job description can give you extra confidence. Also get to know the company (website, mission statement) so you can talk confidently about them.

What your posture says about you
Posture sends the signal of your confidence and power potential. Stand tall, walk tall, and most of all, sit tall. Think of a confident person you know and copy the way they hold their head, shoulders and the rest of their body.

Do not confuse confidence with arrogance.
Confidence and genuine enthusiasm can be the tiebreaker between you or someone else getting the job.

Next week: Become an actor.
