Product review: cots and cribs

Buying a cot or crib takes a lot of thought. Unlike a pushchair, which you can replace at a whim, the thought of having to put together another cot should you get the purchase wrong (and where to store the discarded one!) is enough to push any new parent over the edge.

Have you got enough space to for a full-size cot? How long will the baby use a crib for? Is it really worth spending an arm and a leg for a cot – will my toddler really be able to sleep in it right up to school age? These are just some of the questions you might consider…only you can answer those, but here is a selection of cots and cribs we like.

The space saver: the Crystal Gliding Crib, Mamas and Papas ? ?120
When space is an issue and you don;t want to start your new baby’s life in a moses basket, a crib is a good option. Unlike the moses basket that will only last about three months or so, a crib is made of wood and?more sturdy (and a little longer in length) so can be used a lot longer. It’s basically a cot in miniature form, with some added features like being able to rock (or glide) your baby to sleep).

We especially liked the Crystal Gliding Crib from Mamas and Papas as not only does it look cute, but it is very easy to put together. It took about 15 minutes to put together because all the connectors just?slot into place (you could probably do it without following the instructions, it’s that easy!).

Puschchair, pram, carrycot...what more could a baby need?

The versatile: Silver Cross Classic Sleepover, ?550
Any mum will know what a nuisance it can be to move a sleeping baby out of a pushchair into a cot, only to wake her up when you’ve just taken her out for a stroll to get her to sleep in the first place! I wonder if this is what Silver Cross had in mind when they came up with the the Sleepover?

Basically, with this bundle you get the chassis (the wheels essentially), but the Sleepover system is the pram, come reversible pushchair, come overnight carrycot. And with the carrycot, you can take it off the chassis and click it onto a wooden rocking stand (you can also make the stand stay in a fixed non-rocking position). And, you can dress it up so it looks like a proper bed using the Moses set, which is included.

A contemporary twist to a traditional cot

The traditional: Mamas and Papas Lillia cot – ?250
This is a beautiful white spindle design cot with domed leg tops and a stunning gloss finish. It is a full-size cot so will last your child from baby through to it’s early years. It features a three position bed base, which means you won’t have to break your back in the early days and you can lower it when your baby grows into a curious cot-climbing toddler.

We especially like the finish on this cot, especially for the price – this one will go the duration, and through several babies.
