Support ‘crucial for female start-ups’

Women starting their own business need continuing support and encouragement, it has been claimed.

According to woman’s support association, Prowess, women value on-going and supportive relationships. Female entrepreneurship has grown in most regions of the UK since 2003, according to a recent report from the organisation and substantial growth has been experienced in England.

Alice Kent, a researcher for Prowess, said that while women were becoming increasingly attracted to starting their own business, they needed more support to encourage the process.

“Women value pre-enterprise support and ongoing personal training. They also welcome mentoring relationships and the chance to exchange ideas with someone with previous experience of setting up in business,” said Ms Kent.

She also said that there are complex reasons as to why more men than women start business in the 18 to 24 year-old age group.

But Ms Kent said this may be because women want more experience before they start their own business.

“They want to have a few years of practical experience in the sector under their belt, to ensure they have the knowledge necessary to make a success of the business,” she added.
