We all need to eat to survive – and if you’re a busy working mum, you’ll often not get to eat as healthily as you’d like.

Follow these five simple tips and you will be amazed at the difference it makes over a short period of time:

Chew your food properly
The only way we can actually break down our food on its way through the digestive tract is by using our teeth and chewing. Ideally we should aim to chew each mouthful 20 times. Chewing also gives the stomach time to prepare for the oncoming food.

Take your time
Gulping your food is one sure way to bring about bloating. Try to sit down when eating and take the time to savour your food. Don’t try to do other things at the same time and don’t jump up as soon as the meal is finished.

Your body cannot run and digest food at the same time. Follow the example of our continental cousins who love to linger over their meals. At the weekend or whenever possible, see mealtimes as a chance to catch up with family and friends. You’ll be amazed at how much better it makes you feel.

Reduce fluid intake
It is best not to drink 20 minutes either side of your meals so as not to dilute the digestive juices and to give the enzymes time to work properly.

Reduce acidity
Cut down on tea, coffee and alcohol to help reduce the acidity in the stomach. Aim to drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water every day. Replace these caffeine fuelled drinks with herbal teas or coffee substitutes such as Bambu.

Diet
If you continue to eat refined and processed foods which are low in fibre, loaded with sugar, salt and artificial additives, then your digestive system will run into problems. This can easily be remedied by including more natural foods, fruit and vegetables as well as nuts and seeds.
