When it comes to internet marketing, there are some basic things that you need to avoid so that you will not waste your time or irritate your audience.

These are very common mistakes that even those who are more experienced should know better about (but often forget) and if you are able to avoid these, you will have an edge on your competition.

  1. Don’t be a copycat
    Copying other people’s website designs, content, logo, product portfolio etc may seem like a quick way to get around doing the work yourself, but it will usually come back to bite you – if you don’t end up being called to answer by those you have copied, your audience will soon realise that you’re a fraud.

    Originality is refreshing, and it will engage your audience because they will have done a lot of research themselves already and have come to you for a new approach to their want or need.

    Let’s face it – if you can’t come up with anything original, perhaps you’ve chosen the wrong industry to work in all together.

  2. Being too general
    Making your presence known online is all about having a niche – a target market that you meet the needs of. If you don’t choose a good niche, you will will struggle to succeed a d likely spend a lot more time and money satisfying everyone, with not much in return.

    The internet already has a lot of competition and so you need to find an area of expertise where you can be seen as the expert – the trusted source, and business will start to come to you.

  3. Don’t rush it
    Too many people simply try to get overnight success because this is what they have read online, and in all the good books about making money online. If you’re serious about succeeding, you need to take it step at a time and let the business grow naturally.

    Focus on your long-term success – you don’t want your business to be a flash in the pan, after all…
