Whether it’s for more flexibility or work-life balance, running your own business can bring a lot of positives into the family home.

how to find a business ideaBut for many mums, when you don’t have a burning idea that you just can’t wait to start your business in, it can feel like you’ll never get that financial freedom you’re looking for.

Here are three basic tips to help you bring out that business you have inside you:

1. Work out the type of business you DON’T like

One of the easiest and fastest ways to narrow down your search for the right business for you to start is to work out what the wrong business for you to get into would be.

For example, if the thought of selling things to total strangers makes you panic or feel uncomfortable, then you know a sales based job just isn’t for you. If you really don’t want to be stuck behind a desk for most of your working day, then an office or desk-based job just isn’t for you.

Why set yourself up for misery and failure ahead of time? Be honest with yourself to give yu business a fighting chance – finding something you’re truly passionate about will make the hard business days less stressful.

2. Work out what you DO like doing

It might be something you’re doing now or have done in the past to earn money, or just done as a hobby. It might be a special interest of yours. It could even be related to a class you took in school or a particular subject you’re interested in…think deep and hard, it’s there somewhere inside you, you just need to bring it out.

Don’t discount anything at this stage – even the silly or impossible ideas could lead to a lucrative one further down the line.

3. Take a close look at your strengths and weaknesses

The ideal business for you to get into would be one that you like doing and one that makes use of your strongest abilities, skills, or talents.

However, your abilities, skills, or talents shouldn’t be your first consideration when choosing a business or profession for you to get into.

Why? For two reasons:

– Firstly, there may be all sorts of things you’re good at that you don’t really like doing all that much.

– Secondly, there isn’t any ability, skill, or talent that you can’t develop if you want to. Remember, you could also retrain or go on a short course to achieve that ultimate goal for your business.
