Get smart with the way you use your phone for a better work-life balance

Us working mums are forever juggling a number of balls at any given time, so it makes sense to use whatever is available to help stay on top of our constant organising and project managing.

If you are not a smartphone user, then you really are missing out. My personal favourit smartphone is the BlackBerry – I’ve been using them for a number of years now, and it really has revolutionised the way I work.

Here are some BlackBerry apps that I use to make juggling this website, two children, a full-time job, a hjusband and other businesses that little bit easier!

1. gwabbit

If you run a business, ten you’ll be used to getting emails from people that you know and want to follow up at some point. But it can be a bit of a  pain having to choose between adding their email address or their phone  number, then manually adding the one left over…not to mention their  addres is you need that, too. It’s no wonder then that it’s so easy to put  it off for later if all you want to do is get on with some admin.

In comes gwabbit, the BlackBerry app that will basically do all of this for you. Everytime you open an email, it will scan it for contact details, and  set up that  person’s details in your contacts. It will grab their full  name, company name, telephone number, email address…and all without you  noticing. You can set it to do this automatically or ask you before it  saves contact details.

There is a free and a premium BlackBerry app (costs $9.99), and the premium version let’s people know when you have added them to your contacts book via email – that’s the only difference between the two.

2. ToDoMAtrix Professional – Task Management

If you’re like me and always have the best intentions at heart when it comes to writing a to-do list and sticking to it, but somehow keep pushing  things further and further down the list and only finding it months down  the line, buried deeply in emails that you are just about to delete, then  the Rex Wireless ToDoMatrix is just for you.

It’s great for keeping on track of projects and lets you categorise them in any way you want. The basic setup already have work, family and travel  already preset, but you can change and add to this as you require.

When you set a task, you can even assign it to another person and the app will keep track of their progress, so it is great for mumpreneurs who are  not only juggling their own work, but the work of others.

You even have the option of emailing tasks to yourself if you want an extra reminder.

While there is a 30-day free trial version available, this app costs $59.99 to use the full version. There is also a basic version coming out soon, the developers tell me.

This is a must-have for every busy mum. Watch this space – we’ll be giving away some free licenses for this very soon!

3. TxtLater

If you don’t want to forget to text people on special ocassions, or you know that you want to remind your colleague or spouse about something, but  don’t want to send the message too early, then the TxtLater BlackBerry appis just for you.

You literally type the message and set the date and time you want it to be sent. So, those friends you already struggle to keep in touch with don’t  have to be offended because you forgot their birthday!

And there’s no need to worry about messages not being sent – you get a detailed delivery report of all you past text and email messages.

TxtLater can also be used to remind you to call people, too. And all for free.

4. HulloMail Smart voicemail

HulloMail is an app that lets you listen to your voicemail when you want and in any form that you want. Instead of dialling up your voicemail, you can listen to your messages as an mp3. So if you’re like me and you get quick a few voicemail messages a day, and a lot of them are spammy, then you can ignore them!

HulloMail emails you whenever you get a voicemail message and sends an mp3 file (in a very small size, so don’t worry about clogging up your mailbox with large files), and you can listen to the message right from the email without having to dial in to your voicemail and listen to nuisance voicemail messages before you get tot he one you want.

Another plus is that it is free – I have now stopped dialling into my network’s voicemail number because with HulloMail, I can ring a number that is free because it comes out of my free minutes.
