When you’re looking for work, it’s a good idea to spread your search as wide as possible – don’t just rely on a weekly newspaper, or you could miss out on your dream job.
Where to find jobs
There are many places to look and there’s lots of help available. Technology has changed the way that employers recruit – visit job sites like www.totaljobs.com and www.monster.com, set up a profile page on LinkedIn and start networking with companies you’d like to work for.
Newspapers and trade magazines are a good place to start, but make sure you check their websites, too, as jobs will be updated on them between publications, and you could be too late if you wait for jobs to appear in the print version.
Tell the world you’re looking for a job!
Many people get work through friends or family, so make sure everybody knows you’re looking for work. It can be hard work, so you need to be persistent.
Use recruitment agencies
Recruitment agencies can take the hard work out of job searching, especially if you have skills people are looking for. If you have been out of the work for a while and just returning to work, they can be a good place to start because they can check your CV and let you know what type of roles you can apply for, the salary you can expect – and tell you if you need to make any changes to your CV.
Go to your local Jobcentre
Jobcentres can do a lot to help you on your return to work journey. They have trained advisers who can help you with your job search – they’ll even help you with the job search.
If you have been out of work for a while, you may be entitled to a grant for a suit to wear to interviews, and help towards childcare – but you’ll need to speak to the Jobcentre to see if you qualify.
